Synopsis: Lotus is considering using a V8 to meet Euro 7 emission regulations. Logically, Lotus would source the V8 engine from AMG, but a V8 sourced by Cosworth would capture the spirit of Lotus.

Possible V8 Option

Less than a year ago, AutoCar reported that Lotus was considering a V8 option for the Lotus Emira, after CEO Feng Qingfeng said the current Toyota V6 boosted powertrain would not meet Euro 7 emission requirements.

Automotive journalists and Lotus enthusiasts have reasonably concluded that Lotus would expand its partnership with AMG to supply a V8, given that AMG already provides the I4 powerplant. This would be a spectacular partnership and would make sense from a cost, supply chain, and production standpoint.

Lotus contemplating a V8 option for the Emira — as a long-time Lotus enthusiast, I can't help but daydream about how thrilling that could be. From a driver's perspective, a V8 would elevate the Emira into an unmatched experience.

However, as a car purist, it feels slightly off-putting to see a German powerplant in a British icon, especially a brand as iconic as Lotus. Understandably, many McLarens and other British automakers outsource their engines. But hear me out.

Take the current Toyota Supra Mk V, for example, while a good sports car, many refused to buy it at first, calling it a repackaged BMW Z4. The fact that the Supra isn't an actual Japanese car is one of the many reasons the Nissan Z is outselling it, despite the Z's hefty price. Nissan understood its community, and so should Lotus. Granted, Lotus is only looking for an engine, yet it is still an applicable comparison of vehicle purity.

All that to say, many Emira owners and fans — myself included — would love to see Lotus embrace its British Racing Heritage even more, and I'd love to see that spirit extended into the powertrain itself. The Clark Edition Emira is a beautiful nod to Lotus history and an astounding driver. Pushing the envelope further, imagine a Cosworth-developed, naturally aspirated, flat-plane-crank V8 — purpose-built to honor Lotus' Formula 1 legacy.

Here's the Vision:

  • A displacement around 4.0L, revving to 8,000–9,000 rpm

  • Output of 500+ hp and 350+ lb-ft of torque

  • Dry-sump lubrication for reliability and weight distribution

  • Mated to a bespoke Hewland manual gearbox with shorter, optimized gear ratios

  • A top speed exceeding 200+ mph

Of course, such a configuration would increase costs — perhaps by $65K to $80K — but it would also transform the Emira into a world-class driver's car, one that could rival and even outshine the "overproduced" sports cars of today, such as the Corvette and 911. Estimating an MSRP of $180,000 to $195,000.

In true Colin Chapman fashion, "Simplify, then add lightness." I'd love to see this V8 Emira offer a carbon fiber package:

  • Carbon-fiber body panels and/or a carbon-fiber monocoque or tub, with an estimated $80K to $100K additional premium

  • A curb weight under 3,000 lbs.

  • An optional track package, perhaps in collaboration with JUBU Performance

The Emira powertrain should also be engineered to handle significantly more power, encouraging aftermarket tuning without major component overhauls. This would further boost sales of the Emira, as all car enthusiasts love additional performance upgrades. A Cosworth V8 Emira carbon fiber package would have an estimated MSRP of $260,000 to $295,000. Lotus might have to charge more than estimated, yet it can be guaranteed that such a Lotus would be unlike any other experience offered by any other automaker.

Some may suggest the Corvette ZL1X for these prices, but it doesn’t offer a manual and carries the weight penalty of a hybrid system. A direct competitor in terms of experience would be the manual-equipped 911 GT3, but it would lack a V8 exhaust note and mid-engine placement. Furthermore, the Emira has a greater curb appeal than the GT3’s more subtle, classic styling.

A Car for the Drivers

While the Evija is an extraordinary hypercar, it's out of reach for most Lotus fans, costing in the millions. The Emira, on the other hand, is the spiritual successor to everything Lotus stands for — analog feel, pure connection, and lightweight high-performance vehicles. This potential Cosworth V8 variant could be the car that strengthens the brand's soul and captures the imagination of the next generation of drivers who are honored to own a piece of British Racing Heritage.

Practicability of it All

While the above-mentioned would increase the MSRP of the Lotus Emira, this could help Lotus maintain a higher profit margin amid the United States of America’s fluctuating tariffs. In the same AutoCar article, it was noted that Lotus had to halt shipments of the Emira and cancel sales of the Eletre and Emeya due to tariffs at the time the article was written. Lotus must not just survive, but flourish during these geopolitical times and ever-evolving global market demands. It is possible that a higher-tier Lotus Emira could double revenue and improve ROI. Thus, allowing Lotus to venture into additional variants, such as an Emira Roadster.
